BLAZE IN PICCADILLY.
FRANTIC APPEALS FOR HELP. HOUSEKEEPER SUFFOCATED. BY CABLE—PEESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT. Received Nov. 27, 8.40 a.m. LONDON, Nov. 26. There was a sensational fire- in the British Empire Club annexe in Piccadilly Circus during the early part of this morning. The club is widely used residentially by overseas visitors. It is a five-storied building. The fire started at the bottom of the lift shaft, and in a few seconds the whole staircase was alight. The inmates,, in their night attire, were at the windows pleading for help. When the brigades arrived escapes were speedily hoisted and eleven people were rescued from windows. Some were unconscious and five were taken to hospital. A subsequent search discovered that the housekeeper , Mabel Webley, had been suffocated in her room.
