WIDOW’S DEATH.
MURDERED WHILE DRIVING. BT CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT ' MEXICO CITY, Nov. 16. Two Mexicans have been sentenced to death for the murder last August of Mra. Rosaline Evans, the English widow of the former president of’ the Bank of London in Mexico. Mrs Evans was shot through the left side when driving a buggy near Texmelacan State, Puebla, TRIAL OF OFFENDERS.
(Received Nov. 18, 11.50 a.m.) / MEXICO CITY, Nov. 17. The Evans’ trial lasted a week. Prominent features of the evidence on behalf of the British community were letters Mrs Evans left declaring her belief that the Agraristas intended to assassinate her, but officers submitted testimony which convinced the judge that the Agraristas had nothing to do with the crime, which was committed for robbery by two peasants, who finely confessed to the crime. Representatives of the Evans' family are not convinced by their confession.—Sydney Sun Cables.
Mrs. Rosalie Evans figured prominently in the recent diplomatic dispute between Britain and Mexico. It was through the action of the British Charge d’Affaires, Mr. Herbert Cummins, in protecting her against the efforts of the Mexicans to dispossess her of her. farm that he was ordered by the Mexican Government to leave the country. On his arrival in England on July 13 Mr. Cummins spoke in the highest terms'of the brave English widow. He described her as a wonderful woman, and proceeded: “White-haired, nearly 50, she stands on her farmyard battlements, a rifle on her shoulder, defying assault, or beating off attackers with the courage of the bravest man. When farming Mrs. Evans wears riding breeches, but when visiting the city she dresses in the height of fashion. The last I heard of her was that she was-still'at her post on the roof of the house. I believe it will take a large force to'defeat her, as the attackers dare not kill her, seeing that the whole world knows and is thrilled by her wonderful resistance. Mrs. Evans is the sort of woman who is born once in a century.”
