LABOURERS’ REQUEST
DEMANDS BY WATERSIDERS. THE NAPIER DISPUTE. (BT TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. NAPIER, Nov. 17. The watersiders at the port to-day accepted work on the lighters, but continued their refusal to man the barges, and the matter has been referred to national disputes committee. Though some of the men assert that the barges are unsafe and are not so comfortable to work in as the lighters, it is generally admitted that the dispute is'almost totally confined to the jpay. Pending the Arbitration Court’s decision in the recent application for a higher rate for men on barges, the pay remains at 2s 2d per hour. By the use of barges the work of loading or unloading a liner in the roadstead is expedited, and the job runs out quicker than if only lighters were used. The men therefore claim 3s per hour on the barges in order to mate up the differences in the amount earned on a definite task by lighters occupying a longer time. The employers have renewed their offer of twopence extra, but the men declined.
