CHEAP ELECTRICITY.
GERMAN INVENTS SCHEME. , BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, Nov. 16. t The Berlin correspondent of . the' Daily Chronicle states that a company is being formed to apply the principle of Anton Flettner’® invention to a series of high rotary towers, from which it is believed the whole country can be supplied with electricity at a minimum of cost. This will revolutionise industrial economics. Flettner, whom the Government and scientists are taking perfectly seriously, declares that the discovery will render coal and ! oil almost superfluous as sources of electric power.
Anton Flettner recently invented a vessel, propelled by the wind by means of a device which, it is claimed, will reduce the cost of working by from 50 to 80 per cent compared with ordinary sails. Instead of a mast there are two metal cylinders, which rotate at the rate of 100 revolutions a minute on the magnus principle. These yield a driving power 15 times as great as any linen sails. Flettner is also the inventor of a famous aeroplane rudder.
