DIMMED LIGHTS

ARE THEY ADVISABLE? SERIOUS MOTOR ACCIDENT. VICTIM’S OPINION. [Should motorists dim their lights when approaching each other? This vexed question has formed the subject of many bitter discussions, and at an inqu, est recently a Coroner ventured the opinion that it was inadvisable to do so. Many motorists, "however, agree that dimming is essential .to avoid accidents. It would appear . from the following Press Association message that dimming would, in one instance at least, have been advisable.] (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATIONWELLINGTON, Nov. 10. Failure of two drivers: to dim the lights on their motor cars is thought to be accountable for an accident which occurred on the Hutt road on Saturday night, in which four persons were injured. 1 Stanley Aston, who was returning from Petone to Wellington, states that when near the railway bridge at Kaiwarra he saw approaching him two motor cars with strong headlights. He dimmed liis lights, but they did not. "As a consequence he became blindejd by the glare and found himself heading straight for one of the concrete piers of the bridge. He swerved sharply to avoid it, at the same time pusfir ing down what he thought was the foot brake, but which proved to be the accelerator. The car leapt forward ■and struck a stout Telegraph pole, snapping it in two. Then the car turned a complete somersault and became a total wreck. , Aston had his left arm broken, but the other occupants marvellously escaped with slight injuries.
