ELTHAM COUNTY COUNCIL.
AIONTHLY MEETING. ROUTINE MATTERS. The monthly meeting of the Eltham County Council was held on Saturday, when there were present Crs. C, ‘J. Belcher (chair), R. J. Knuckey, A. V. Messana, At. W. Barker, A. Campbell, W E. Carter C. E. McGuinness, and E.’ J. Gifford. . , The loss sustained by Cr. Knuckey in the death of his wife was referred to by the chairman, who described the late Airs. Knuckey as one of the .finest women he had ever met. A vote of condolence with the family in their loss - was carried by members standing a moment in silence. • . \The Taranaki Education Board advised that the council -had been granted the- frte use of the school site at Atoeroa for grazing purposes for road l men’s horses, or the temporary use ef the site for the erection of a roadman’s whare, with the right to remove any buildings that may be erected in the event of the site being required for school purposes. It was explained that this was the outcome of the. school having been erected on the council’s site.
The council agreed to assist in the ' observance of two minutes’ silence from 11 a.m. on Armistice Day (November ii). \ ./ , The stationmaster. at Eltham drew attention to the fact that a tarpaulin at the station had been damaged by one of the county lorries. The cost of the repairs would be debited to the v council.—The letter was received. The’ secretary of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition Company notified the council of a meeting to be held at New Plymouth on the after-' noon of Monday, November 10, at which directors of the company would be present. . ■ % Councillors agreed that it was a donation that was wanted, and Cf. Campbell moved that the company be advised that unfortunately the council could not attend. Cr. Campbell’s motion was not-sec-onded, and after some further discussion it was left with the chairman to attend, if possible, and report to the council. The chairman explained that he could not commit the council to any donation. Councillors felt that they would like to do something, hut the council had not got the money. A donation of €lO would be too paltry. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The overseer’s monthly report was as follows: —South Riding: Watertables and culverts were attended to on the Boylan and Rotokare Roads. The drain leading from Mr. Gibson’s property on the Dalziel Road was attended to. The bitumen sealed portion of the Boylan Road was given another coat of sand. Mangatokißidmg: Metal patching was done on. the Stuart Road. Surface work was done on the Eltham, Hastings, and Hunter Roads. The Duthie Road corner was 1 attended to, the crown of the road being picked up and clay blinded. A start has been made to bitumen seal the Eltham Road, between the depot * and Martin’s dip, about 35 chains having been completed. Omona Riding: During the month the crushing plant was taken out to Omona arid set in at the shell rock pit ; Everything is practically ready to start metalling. General maintenance work was carried out on most of the roads in this riding. Kaponga Riding: General maintenance work wa s carried out on most of the roads in this riding. Sand was carted on to the Manaia Road. \ Eltham Ruling: Metal patching, widening, and water-tabling was done on the Rawhitiron Road The re-facing of the half-’ mile of the Anderson Road was competed. Surface work was done on the Rotokare Lake Rond, Tirimoana. Man gaming], and Manga whero Roads. General: The Leyland lorrv has been nut in the shop to be overhauled. The county car needs overhauling and will V started on as soon as the lorrv is finished There were 232 cubic yards of forked metal put through the chin or’sher for the Borough Council Ihe report ivas adopted.
