LOCAL RAILWAY SERVANTS.

ASK FOR, HALF HOLIDAY. Tlie local branch of the «A.S.R.S are endeavouring to secure the Wednesday half holiday for its members, and has requested, the support of the Hiawera Chamber of Commerce., which at last night’s meeting of the Council or the Chamber wais forthcoming. In moving that the request be acceded to, the president (Mr. E. Dixon) said that he considered the request a very reasonable one. Under £ i * arrangement there wia<s no half holiday, and what the men proposed was that they should work three-quarters of an hour extra on each of the other five days in the week to make up the time lost on the half holiday. This arrangement would mandy affect the staff of the goods shed, and it was proposed by the society that there should be in attendance an officer to handle perishable goods on the half holiday, so that neither loss nor hardship .should be inflicted on consignees. With this safeguard he thought that it was quite safe for the Chamber to support the request. Mr. Fletcher said that with the assurance voiced by the president he thought that it was quite safe to assume that no person would be incommoded, and he would second the motion. Mr. B. McCarthy mentioned the questions of demurrage, and it was decided to add to the motion that provided that consignees were protected in regard to delivery of perishable goods and against demurrage charges the Chamber support the request of the A.S.R.S. In this form the motion uas duly curritd.
