HAWERA SHOPS.
SHOW WEEK AND CHRISTMAS holidays: TOWN LIGHTING DISCUSSED. At a meeting of the Hawera Retailers'’ Association last night several matters of -interest w£re discussed. The meeting was /fairly evenly divided upon the question of whether the shops should close on Thursday, November 20 —People’s Day at the Egmonb A. and P. Show. Finally it was decided, after a lengthy discussion, that shopkeepers be requested to close from 12.30 to 4 p.m. on that day. The shops will close for the usual half-holiday on AVednesday, November 19. " ' The meeting discussed the Christmas and New Year holidays, and it was decided that business premises close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and the day following, and also at '6 p.m. on Saturday after Christmas and the Saturday after New Year. Cards are to- be distributed stating distinctly the holiday arrangements. Members devoted considerable time to discussing town lighting and the community lighting scheme. AVitli regard to community lighting, the installation of which is; nearly complete, it was decided that an opening fiinctibn be arranged for Tuesday, November 18, and that: the Mayor be asked to turn on the lights. A speciaL committee was set up to make the arrangements. The general lighting system of the town was the subject of comment, the opinion being that t.ie present system was not up to the m.irk, and a deputation, consisting of Messrs Gilbert, Harrop, Sutton and AA’estaway, with power to add, was appointed to wait on the Borough Council to discuss improvements in lighting ,especially at. the entrances to the town—-Glover Road and Princes Street. The deputation was also authorised to ask the council to give greater publicity to the borough by-raws governing motor traffic, the association stating that a. good deal had been heard in tue way of comment by people in the country that Hawera’s motor by-laws were too harsh. The association cou- i sidered that the fact was that people were not sufficiently aware of the nature of the by-laws, and that if they were made more public misunderstandings would be removed. The Council is also to be asked to expedite the work of providing suffilently lighted parking places unsighted cars can be parked at .light time.
