FOR THE POLICE. TROUBLE IN A BACKYARD. An impression that he could, without fear of interference, amuse himself with a little target practice, using for his purpose a .303 rifle and a benzine tin, resulted in Russell Hurley, a boy of about 15 years, appearing in the Hawera. Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of firing a rifle close to a public place. “You ought to know that a bullet fired from a .303 will go through six benzine tins and a fence and then kill a man,” said the Magistrate, who, in order to emphasise the seriousness of defendant’s action, imposed a fine of £5 and 7s court costs. On defendant representing that he only got Is a week pocket money the Magistrate reduced the fine to ss, whirl amount the boy had to find himself. YESTERDAY’S SITTING. At the Magistrate’s Cqurt yesterday a reminder that when in Hawera she must obey the borough by-laws was given Ruth Hawken, who 'was fined 15s and 7s’ court costs, together with 6s service fee, for driving a car without a rear light. Two youths, Geoi’ge Roland AYalker and AVm. AValker, were each charged with failing to register under the Defence Act. Both lived in the noneffective area, and a fine of 10s and 7s court costs was imposed in each case The action of Douglas, Eov AY'illiams, who on a recent date drove a motor car on the wrong side of the street and' at an excessive speed, when turning from Regent Street into High Street, demanded that he should be made an example of, and accordingly charges of cutting . the corner and exceeding the speed limit of six miles per hour were brought against him.
