OFFENDERS FINED. A number of offenders against the Hawera. Borough by-laws were fined at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. In connection with a charge of leaving his car in Albion Street without lights, George Preece, of Matapu, forwarded a- written plea (of. guilty, and mentioned that he had fyeen under the impression that cars could be left unlighted the red discs. This impression was dispelled, however, by the infliction of a fine of 5s and 7s court costs, together with expenses of service amounting to Bs. The explanation that he did not know his lights were out was made by Mr. Ryan, who appeared on behalf of Archie Bayly, charged with driving his car without lights. A fine of 2s 6d and 7s court costs was imposed as a reminder that greater precautions must be taken in future. A Waverley motorist, named B. W. Harvey, who was represented by Mr. Matthews, will make the unpleasant discovery that for the offence of driving his car in Hawera without a tail iight he was fined £1 and 7s court cost®. Mr.. Matthews said that the oil container in the rear lamp had dropped out, but to this the police replied that when spoken to Harvey did not even bqther to get out of his car to see what was wrong. Harry Edgar Oliver wrote objecting to his being summoned to appear in answer to a charge of driving his car without lights. In his .letter he said he attempted to dim his head lights, but in doing so inadvertently put them out. Although defendant's letter stated ‘that his lights were only off for “a minute or so,” the Magistrate inflicted a fine of £1 10s and 7s court costs.
A warning in the form of a fine of 10s and 7s court- costs was issued against Mrs. lan McKenzie, who was -barged with leaving her car in Princes Street without lights. Patrick McCarty evidently had a run for his money, for when charered with riding his bicycle without- a light, the borough inspector stated that he apprehended defendant after McCarty had ridden from Ohangai to Hawera without a- light. A fine nf 15s and 7s court costs, together with a prosecution fee of 5s was imposed.
