It is announced in shipping circles that from 7 o’clock on Saturday morning till Monday morning no work will he done by members of the Waterside Workers’ Federation on any wharf in Australia, and stop-work meetings will he held at every port. The. move is believed to be a threat to force the hands of the ship owners by striking when the Melbourne Cup carnival is at hand. . It is announced that the quarterly adjustment in wages owing to the reduction in the cost of living had resulted in a reduction of 2s 6d monthly, in the wages in all maritime unions and a fall of a half-penny an hour to 2s 9Jd for waterside workers. MELBOURNE. Oct. 3Q. At the conference* of representatives of the transport unions convened by the Trades Hall industrial disputes committee with the object of averting if possible the threatened strike no definite conclusions were reached, and the conference adjourned till today so that definite proposals might be made for negotiations to be opened with the Sydney ship owners before action is decided on for carrying the proposed strike into .effect. It is ascertained frojn an authoritative source that the Government intends to reject the shipping scheme. It is believed, that though Cabinet holds the view’ that the proposals provide for a speeding up of shipping services. the same object' could he attained at considerably less expense to the Commonwealth if the existing services were accelerated.
