BEEF INDUSTRY.
INTENSE COMPETITION. BY CABLE—PRES 3 ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Oct; 248., 1.40 p.m. BRISBANE, Oct. 28. Speaking on the beef industry at Rockhampton, Mr. S. M. Bruce said that the future of the cattle industry ivas good. During-the last three years the industry had been faced with intense- competition from the Argentine, and the resultant struggle had reacted against high 'prices for Australian beef, but the Argentine, too, had been losing money. They were reaching the limit, and the end must come soon. It was certain that the Argentine prices wpulcl have to rise in the near future, and that rise would have a greater effect on the Australia?! beef industry as far as export trade Avas concerned. Britain was now alive to the necessity of keeping the cattle industry going, and if the proposal to establish a licensing bpard in Britain, ti wou *d give licenses to import beef from countries other than the Dominions only when the supplies from the Dominions were absorbed, was adopted, it would make an extraordinary difference to the Australian meat trade.
