KAPONGA QUEEN CARNIVAL.
. FARMERS’ CANDIDATE. \ The big final rally held in. the Convent school rooms on Monday evening in support of the farmers’ 1 ' nominee, Miss E. Schicker, attracted a big attendance of supporters and proved one of the most entertaining bf the many events organised in aid ofj the candidate. Keen interest centred in'a lazy stick competition, which afforded: some exciting exhibitions of this popular, test of strength and endurance; The £5 prize and challenge cup awarded was won by Mr. M. Malone after a wellcontested final with Mr. Jack Malone, brothers noted for their skill in the sport. The issue in the various bouts was decided by the best of three pulls. Results of the preliminaries l ; were as follow: J. Doyle beat P. Cunningham, G. Deakin beat* Bashman, M.' Malone beat A. Zimmerman, J. Malone 'beat O. Gernhoefer, M. Malone beat Deakin, J. Malone beat Doyle. Messrs J. O’Donoghue and A. Sadler officiated respectively as judge and starter. Supper was served by a ladies’ committee under the supervision of /Mrs. J. Doyle, and an enjoyable dance programme was arranged by Mr. A. Sadler as M.C., music being provided by Mrs. C. Evans. Appreciated items of song were contributed by Mrs; J. Murphy, while further entertainment was catered for in sales of surprise packets, ping-pong contests, and other interesting competitions. THE GRAND FINALE.
The various committees are making every endeavour to lend attraction to the two days’ bazaar, on the conclusion of which, at 10.30 p.m. on Friday, the result of the queen competition is to be declared. No official announcement of the respective positions of the three candidates has really been made, but the issue is expected to be very close. Various side-shows and competitions are being arranged, to provide interest and entertainment for all who visit the bazaar. The open tug-o’-wa r tourney, in which some of the best teams in the district will be competing, should furnish thrilling exhibitions, and another big attraction is offered in the lazy stick competition being organised. A. large attendance of .visitors from all parts of the district is anticipated.
