TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL.
MEETING OF HAWERA BOARD. The ordinary meeting was attended by Messrs R. S. Sage (chairman), A. Lees, J. W. Harding, H. Hodge, T. W. J. Howell, and Mrs Gilbert. Mr A. Gray, headmaster, was also present. In his report the headmaster stated that the "numbers on the roll are: _ Commercial, . senior 10, intermediate 15, junior ,23; iiterary, senior 20, intermediate 19, junior A 28, junior B 4 ; engineering, senior 12, junior 16: agriculture, 8; home science, 11—total 166. At present there is a good deal of sickness among' the students. Good work is being done by various classes in preparation for the examinations which begin about November 17. The annual steeplechase took place on 15th inst., and was most successful. The hoys much appreciate the kindness of Mrs Bridge and Mr Beauchamp in handing fruit, etc., to them as they passed along Glover road. The school is also indebted to the Hawera Timber and Joinery Co. for the gift of a portable steam engine. The students, under the supervision of the instructor, are obtaining valuable experience taklng apart and cleaning the engine. The Borough Council has donated some sets of Shakespeare’s plays froxh the library, and these will prove useful. The hostel grounds are nearly all sown down with various vegetables, and scheme of work for the agriculture plot has been prepared by Mr He ward. The school sports will take place on Wednesday, November- 5, when it' is honed all the members of the- board will be present. The' headmaster added to his report that five boys had taken up positions, with good prospects, in the town. TENDERS. Tenders were accepted as follows for work at the hostel: Concrete paths, dairy shed, picket fence and gates, Messrs Bernard and Sauire, £9O 5s 6d The roadway trill also be completed at a cost of £35. - GENERAL. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Borough Council and to those others who had made gifts to the bovs and the school? * Letters were received from the department advising the decision to establish the district high school at Manaia. A resolution was passed that the correspondence be placed before the member for the district with a view to further enquiry into the matter of the motor service with; Manaia as compared with the expense of the proposed school, and that all details be laid before the member by the headmaster.. A statement of the financial position showed bank balance £l4B 5s 4d. and amounts due £l3O 7s lOd, and accounts totalling £42 3s were passed for payments . ' An offer of. 51 volumes of the great English classics, handsomely bound, Havard edition, at a' cost of about 11s 9d per volume, was/ received from a Wellington firm. It s was decided to ask for the best cash price. This was all the business, and the meeting. then adjourned.
