LAWFUL COMMANDS.
CREW REFUSE TO OBEY. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Oct. 21, 11.35 a.m.) / SYDNEY, Oct. 21. 1 welve seamen off the Union Company’s steamer Kawatiri were charged at the Police Court at Newcastle with refusing to obey the lawful. commands of the master to take the vessel to sea, owing to three additional men signing 011 at Newcastle under the New Zealand instead of Australian articles. Stewart, master of the Kawatiri, said the ship was ready to put to sea on the night of the 16th. The defendants, who were greasers, trimmers and firemen, refused, to go below, as they contended the master had refused to replace the men who had left with union men who were available. The accused were sentenced to 14 clays’ gaol. .The management states that although tlie Kawatiri would be prevented from sailing indefinitely there was little danger of the trouble spreading to other of the company’s steamers.
