MANAIA.
(From Our Own'Correspondent). PLUNKET SOCIETY. A meeting of the Manaia Plimket Society was held last week. Present: Mesdames T. Sutherland (chair), Jjidd, Hobday, Swainson, Roberts, Craig, Le Fleming, fcmith, Thornton, Barleyman, Poynteri All present were elected a- general committee for the ensuing year, with Mrs Young’s and Miss Patterson’s names added to same. Mrs T. Sutherland was elected president ; vice - presidents, Mesdames Smith and Swainson. It was decided to hold a street stall on November 4, and the committee will be pleased to receive donations, to be left at the Farmers’ Trading Co., shop. The following subscriptions were received : —Mesdames E. Harrison, Le Fleming, Hobday, Barleyman, Gamlin, and Smith, 5s each. EUCHRE AND DANCE. The final euchre party and dance, held in aid of the sports queen, aas held last Wednesday night in the Manaia Town Hall, there being a good attendance. The prizes for the evening were won by Mrs F. McPhillips and Mr McDonald, and the points prize for the season by Mrs Rothery and Mr McDonald. A splendid supper was provided and first-class music was supplied by Mrs L. Mudford, Misses McCarty and C. Vine, and : Mr F. M. Landers carried out the duties of M.C. well. All present had a very pleasant evening. MANAIA BAND. The annual meeting of the Manaia Municipal Brass Band will .be held in the bandroom to-night at 8 o’clock. It is to be hoped all members and intending members will be present, so as to place the band on a good footing. WEDNESDAY’S CONCERT. Great preparations are being made for the grand concert to be held in the Manaia Town Hail on Wednesday night. A first-class programme has been arranged, and the names of contributors appears in to-night’s issue of the Star. The committee are to be commended for being able to procure such special talent. The public will no doubt be well catered for, and a treat is in store for all present. After the concert a dance will be held. A .good supper will be provided. If weither conditions are favourable there should be a record attendance. LIBRARY. The Waimate Plains Public Library Committee meeting was held on Friday. Present: Messrs Bridge (chair), Snowdon, Scanned, Miller, Badland, Cosgrove and Hunger. Tne chairman welcomed Messrs Badland and Cosgrove as new members of the committee. . The librarian’s report showed' receipts for September amounted to £6 18s sd. The Town Clerk wrote advising that Mr had been appointed to represent the board in place of Mr Howell. Mr C. W. Poynter wrote advising that by request of Mr A. G. Bennett he was forwarding a list of books for selection. On the motion of Messrs Badland and Snowdon it was agreed that the list of books sent by Mr Poynter on behalf of Mr A. G. Bennett be handed to the librarian for revision. The secretary reported that the time was due for the annual remittance to the Times Book Club for magazines. It was moved hv Mr Snowdon, and seconded by Mr Cosgrove, that £25 be remitted to the Times Book Club for the purchase of magazines. On the motion of Messrs Snowdon and Scanned it was agreed that the selection of magazines be left in the hands of the Selection Committee. Accounts amounting to £7 14s were passed for payment.
