PARK TENNIS CLUB.

TO OPEN ON WEDNESDAY. _ Tennis enthusiasts are reminded of the opening of the Park tennis courts next Wednesday afternoon, when the club expects to commence a very successful season, net only from a pfiiying but from a social point of view. Already about 30 new members have joined, and as all last season’s top players are playing again the standard of play should be fairly high, certainly higher than during any previous season. Amongst the gentlemen there are six or seven who will fight out the first places on the ladder, but the club would benefit if a really strong player could be enrolled. The ladies are very strong this year, and with the inclusion of Mrs Bingham and Mrs Hunt the team ought to compare well with any other ladies’ team in the province. A new committee has been elected, and the personnel comprises a number of young and keen members. Their keenness has been instanced by the manner in which they have attended the reefent committee meetings—the full personnel was present on each occasion.

On the opening day a “Yankee” progressive tournament is to be played, and this'is to be run on similar lines to an ordinary and progressive tournament It has been decided to divide the players into groups of 24, the preliminary rounds in* each group being disposed of in turn, and the winners in each group finally playing off. The first group is timed' to commence play at 1.30 p.m. sharp, and a list of players in. the first group will be published later. His Worship the Mayor, Mr L. A. Bone, who is also president of the club, will formally open the season’s play at about 2.30 p.m., after which the preliminary rounds of the second group will be played. Valuable trophies have been donated.

An endeavour will be made to dispose of the tournament by 4 p.m., when the courts will be thrown open for general play. This will enable those who do not take part in the tournament to get in a few games. * A strong committee to attend to the arrangements for afternobn tea on the opening day has been appointed.
