RAILWAY WORKS.
RIMUTAKA DEVIATION. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, Oct. 16. A deputation to-day waited on the Prime Minister and. the Minister for Public Works respecting the. postponement of the Riniut-aka railway deviation for five' years. Convincing arguments were forthcoming for the great necessity for the work to be undertaken.
: . In reply., the Hon. J. G. Coates said his, railway construction policy had been drawn in the interests of the Dominion as a whole. He sympathised, with Wairarapa, but could not do more for the district than had been laid down. If he could see his way to shorten the period of commencing the, construction it would be done. The department would, in the meantime, consider the question of giving Wairarapa an improved train service. Mr Massey said there was no favouritism shown by the Government in railway construction or anything of that sort. Auckland had been mentioned, but Auckland was only now being settled, while other parts of the Dominion had been settled many years ago. Auckland, he said, was still far from satisfied. ~ .
