TOBACCO DUTY.
BENEFIT TO PIPE SMOKERS. REDUCTION PROPOSED. (by TELFGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, Oct. 16. The House of Representatives tonight %vent into committee of ways and means to consider two resolution's dealing with a reduction of the duty on tobacco. The Minister for Customs (Hon. W. D. Stewart ) said the. Government ’s proposal was iir keeping with the promise made by the Minister for Finance some time ago that there would be a reduction in taxation on pipe tobacco. At present the duty on cut tobacco was 4s lOd per lb and 4s 8d on plug tobacco. The. proposal was to reduce these duties by 8d per pound. This concession would absorb v the sum of £75,400 and would come into force on January 17- next, which would give dealers time to clear their stocks. The Minister also moved that the duty on the following- hinds of tobacco mamifnctiiml in New Zealand, as set forth in paragraphs (a) and (d) of sub-section l of section 22 of the Finance Act, 1921 (No. 2), be abolished as from January 16, 1925, and that the duty as follows be payable on such tobacco if entered for home consumption after that date: On tobacco, cut, Is 8d per lb; on other tobacco, Is fid per lb. These resolutions were agreed to on the voices. The Minister, in answer to Mr T. K. Sidey (Dunedin South), said there won id be a Tariff Bill to give effect, to these resolutions later on, hut he did not propose to bring it down just yet as thevo may lie other items to be included.
