“LUNATIC!”
DIPLOMATIC SENSATION. OFFICER'S STRANGE STORY. LONDON, Sept. 30. Mr Walter Stewart, a counsellor of the British Embassy at Rio de Janeiro, has caused a sensation by asserting that he was arrested and imprisoned as a lunatic and deported to Britain. He says that he u/as on bad tejms with the Ambassador, Sir John Tilley, who was leaving for England to attend a departmental inquiry into their disr agreement. Mr Stewart ■ opened a letter from London, which, he discovered, contained notice of his dismissal. He closed up the envelope carefully, and left the letter for Sir John Tilley, who did not mention its contents to him. Sir John Tilley invited Mr Stewart and his wife, to dinner the following day, and his arrest followed, without warning, some days later. He was eonfined in hospital until he was deported. Two Brazilian doctors vouch for Mr Stewart’s sanity. Sir John Tilley has been. British Ambassador to Brazil since 1920. He is 55 years of age, and was created K.C.M.G. in 1919.
