MURDER OF A GIRL.
SUSPECTED MAN RELEASED POLICE BAFFLED. BY CABLE—PEESS ASSOCIATION —COPY RIGHT MELBOURNE, Oct. 16. In the criminal court the Crown Prosecutor announced that it was not intended to file a presentment against Thomas Cheshire, a newsagent of Caulfield, aged 53, who was arrested on September 13 on a charge of murdering Irene Tuckerman, aged 11 years, whose body was found in a street at Caulfield on August 13. Cheshire was arrested following the inquest. It is stated that the police are unlikely to reopen the investigation of the case, except in the event of fresh evidence coming to light. Cheshire, in an interview, said he was greatly relieved because of his relatives. His wife w T ould be glad to hear what the court had decided, but there was another way to look at it. Practically nothing was said in evidence of matters most important to him. He had a full and adequate defence as a complete reply to the charge, and now he would have an opportunity to state this in public.
