TIMBER ROYALTIES.”

DEPUTATION TO PRIME MINISTER. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATIONWELLINGTON, Oct. 16. To-day a deputation of members of the Legislature waited on the Prime Minister to ask that legislation be passed this session restoring to local bodies the revenue from timber royalties, which they lost when forestry operations were inaugurated in the Dominion. Mr Massey gave a. sympathetic .reply, promising to submit the matter to Cabinet at its first meeting, with the view of arriving at a more equitable arrangement than obtains at present. ■ The deputation, which was introduced by 'Mr O’Brien, said that unless something were done quickly the timber'' royalty question would bo left in abeyance. They wanted legislation passed this session to restore the royalties in 1905. The late Mr Seddon and Mr Alassey himself had stated that the revenue should go to local bodies from royalties.
