OTAGO WAR MEMORIAL. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. OAMARU, Oct. 14. The Governor-General (Lord Jellicoe) laid the foundation stone of the North utago war memorial to-day in the presence of a large gathering. Harbour Board of its intention' to discontinue the upkeep of the lighthouse at Sea View Hill, Hokitika, and to-day inquired if the board was prepared to maintain the .t at its own expense. At a special meeting the board xesolved: “That this board, which maintains the harbour iights at Hokitika, cannot Tindertake either the responsibility or the cost of maintenance of the coastal -gilt at Sea View Hill, which is over a mile distant from the harbour, and was established for the service of intercolonial and coastwise vessels. At the same time, seeing that the Hokitika light is the only one between Puysegar Point and Cape Foulwind, a "distance of 360 miles, and the cost of maintenance ns under £IOO a year, the intention of the Marine Department- to close it would appear cheap and false economy.” OAMARU’S WAR MEMORIAL. In the Magistrate’s Court, when told that the Land Agents’ Association opnosed his application for a land agent’s license, Bert William Munns, wellknown as a private detective, alleged that the association had offered a bribe to- the police. The magistrate said he did not believe a word of it. Munns refused to go into the box, and the case was adjourned. , MAORI BOY DROWNED. WHAKATANE, Oct. 14. A native boy, Kanina Hautana, about six years of age. was drowned in the Waimana River beyond Tahora station last evening, and the body was recovered by natives this morning. 1., lad had crossed the river in order to reach home, and his father usually met him on horseback after school. Last night the father was a little late in reaching the river, and it is surmised that the lad tried to cross tlve waterway by himself, with the result that he got into difficulties in the swift current and was drowned.
