.MANAIA CLUB. (1 rom Our Own Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Mai*aia Tennis Club was held on Friday night, there being a good attendance of members. Present: Mr. G. H. Meuli (chair), Mesdames Meuli (2) Poynter, J. Christie, Smith, 'Snowden'’ and McKay, Messrs. H. Mills, Hannah. Blair. Ryan, Rev. Smith, Hewitson. ' The report and balance-sheet was submitted, the balance-sheet showing excas;-; oj assets over liabilities of £‘lo2 9.s 7d, which was considered very satisfactory. The following is the report: The committee has pleasure in being able' to report a successful season last year, the weather in particular having been on its best behaviour, consequently more play than usual was indulged in. which, showed its eilect in. considerable wear on the tennis courts. These have been all thoroughly overhauled during the off season, and should this year be in better order than ever. The croquet courts also are showing the effects of careful attention by our caretaher. During the year + lie water has been laid on to the grounds and a shower bath built for the men, besides which two of the tennis coiirts have been lengthened, enabling the playing area to be changed whenever the courts show signs of wear. Two new mowers have been procured during the season enabling our caretaker to carry out his duties more successfully than with the old machine. Our annual dance was not held during the year, and in order to make up the loss of revenue usually received from this source a levy of os per member has been made. Owing to the extraordinary expenditure of last year our financial position is rather worse than for some time ’past, but as a good deal of this expenditure will be nonrecurring the outlook for the future is hopeful. Mc require more members, particularly tennis players, and it is hoped that several young persons in the community will join up this year. (the committee wishes especially to thank the ladies for the splendid afternoon teas provided during the season, both for members and •for the '-bowlers on Saturdays, the latter -producing quite a fair revenue. To the donors of trophies we are also very grateful, and as usual our worthy secretary carried out his arduous, duties to perfection. The tennis team was successful in winning the Taranaki B grade competition, though it was rather unfortunate that the final match had to be decided on the spin of a coin owing to the weather preventing the match being completed. We are particularly indebted to several generous members who made very liberal donations towards ground improvements, whilst Other energetic members devoted considerable time to working bees on the courts, and altogether the members' have worked together most harmoniously to promote the welfare of the club. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Mr. A. G. Bennett; president, Mr. M. A. Ryan; vice-president. Rev. J. D. Smith; joint secretary and treasurer, Messrs. L. Young and L. Christie; club captain, Mr. G. Meuli; handicapper and selectors, Messrs. L. Young and L. Christie; auditor, Mr. A. M. Hannah; delegate, Mr. E. G. .Roden. A very successful meeting was brought to. a close with a hearty vote of thanks to the press; also to Mr. A. G.< Jlennett for the use of his office for meetings.
