BARMAN’S DEATH'. . » . SCREAMS OF AGONY. TWO MEN REMANDED:. . (by telegraph—press association. AUCKLAND, Oct, 11. Louis Short, a barman, died in hospital an hour after being admitted as a result of a knife wound in .the groin at the Aurora Hotel, Victoria; Street' West, at nine, o’clock last night. • '• According to the first account oif the tragedy, Short, who was well known at the hotel, had called to see a ffiend. He was heard in an argument with' a stranger, who was carrying a, bottle of liquor, which the stranger asserted Short sold to him, and which Short denied. A struggle followed, and boarders heard screams of agony. They found Short bleeding from a wound in the groin. A man in grey clothes was seen rushing downstairs. Short called out: “There lie is,” and collapsed in a pool of blood. Two young men gave chase and overtook the stranger, who took refuge in a doorway. He lunged at them with a bottle till an opportunity enabled him to dash into the street and disappear. Later they saw a man walking leisurely towards them and believed he was the man they wanted, and detained him. This man admitted to the detectives that he had been in the Aurora. Hotel yesterday, but- denied all knowledge of the affray. He said; he had - been •in company with another greaser, employed on a vessel in port. At the Police. Court this morning, Malcolm Nicolson Kilpatrick and. Benjamin Harrison Shutes were charged that on October 10 . they did murder Louis Short and were remanded. The story as told so far does not explain why the second man was arrested. Short died after an opera.tioA without regaining consciousness. . AUCKLAND, Oct! 10. A barman named Lou. Short' was stabbed in the Aurora’ Hotel to-night, dying in hospital soon after admission.
