THE JERSEY BREED.

BUTTER-FAT TESTS. Excellent figures in tested butter-fat returns are disclosed in the semi-official records of heifers belonging to Mr. E. Joyce’s pedigree Jersey herd at Kaponga, which loomed prominently in the Jersey world during the 1922-23 season through the success of one of its members, Zola of Rosy Creek, in winning the New Zealand junior three-year-old championship and gold medal award with a C.O.R. test of 741.201 b fat and establishing a record for the class. The returns for the season just completed show that the three-year-old Lady Celia (Belvedere. Sun Prince — Celia) produced 612.951 b of fat, and that the two-year-olds, Waihinepai’s Creamy (Passion’s Camp an ile—W aihi ne - pai), with 533.271 b,, Olive’s Darling (Passion’s Campanile—Olive), with 529.871 b, and Celia’s Pride (Rosy Creek Merry Prince—Lady Celia), with 505.94 lb, maintained a standard which would be a credit to any herd. The performances of the last three are of outstanding merit, considering that they recorded the figures as first calvers and commenced testing before attaining the age of two years. Admiral’s Belle, a four-year-old at present under semiofficial test for the first time, produced during the month of September 71.211 b of fat, and with a 5.92 test averaged over 401 b of milk daily. Three offspring of these excellent producers wijl appear in the ring on Monday at the Kaponga club’s pedigree bull fair. Zola of Rosy Creek will be represented by her son, Zola’s Butter Bpy, sired by Bilberry Dandy. Lady Celia, one generation removed in direct descent from the famed sire K.C.8., will be represented by her son Greendale’s Prince, by Passion’s Campanile, while Greendale’s Pride from Farce’s Passion and Celia’s Pride, will represent that promising young dam. Also included in the catalogue is Greendale’s Caius (Passion’s Campanile—Miss Cains), another well-backed yearling from Mr. Joyce’s herd. All four evince the traditional Jersey characteristics, and the proved producing strains of their ancestry should secure for them very favourable consideration bv breeders who will operate during the fair.*
