GLOAMING’S FEAT

EULOGISTIC REFERENCES. NEWSPAPER OPINIONS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT. (Received Oct. 9, 11.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 9. The Herald, referring to Gloaming, says: No doubt many thousands made their way to the course to see old Gloaming on the New South Wales track for the last time. The champion’s farewell gallop was reminiscent of his best performances in his younger days. He seems to defy time and work, and Sydney racegoers are sorry to part with such a fine specimen of thoroughbred. Commenting on the win the Herald says: “After entering the straight the old champion jnst came along in a leisurely sort of way, and although credited with only a head win, it was done very comfortably. Nigger Minstrel did not run the race expected of him. Ballymena stuck to hard tasks, for which he deserves all credit.” The Telegraph says: “In winning his third Craven Plate at Randwick in brilliant style Gloaming proved conclusively that, although in his tenth year, he is nearly, if not quite, as good as at any stage of hi s career. His advantage of a head over Ballymena at the finish would have been considerably greater bad the gelding’s rider, George Young, so desired.” ” Chignon and Nincompoop leave here for Wellington on Saturday.
