Mr T. B. Strong, chief inspector of primary schools in the Dominion, has returned from a visit to Australia, Fiji and Samoa. The death occurred at Blenheim last week at the age of 81 years of a very old settler of Marlborough in the person of Mr John Patchett. Major T. J. Kang, Director of Ordnance Stores, is a patient in a Wellington private hospital, where, he had to undergo an operation yesterday. Mr Marcus Marks, former Government Printer, who has been absent from the Dominion for over two years, received a cordial, welcome heme at a. social evening held in Wellington by the Victoria Bowling Club on Friday night. Mr J. Smart, a well-known ’"gure on the “road,” who is about to enter into private business with his brothers in New Plymouth and Stratford, was farewelled last week by the local members of the Palmerston North Commercial Travellers’ Association. The death occurred on Friday of Mrs Jane Gibson, wife of M.r William Gibson, of the literary staff of the .Dominion, and a lady who had many 1: .ends all over New Zealand. A cable reports the death of Sir Max Waecliter, who in 1902 was High Sheriff of Surrey. He was born in Germany in 1837 and was naturalised in 1865. He made many notable gifts, including four rest homes. To mark the occasion of the recent marriage of Mr. and Airs. T. Hall, Duthie Rohd, a large party of Matapu residents visited the residence of the newly-wedded pair on Thursday evening and participated in an enthusiastic demonstration of .the “tincanning” ceremony. As host and hostess Air. and Airs. Hall entertained with appreciated hospitality. The usual list of toasts was arranged, and an enjoyable programme of various items of entertainment concluded at a late hour with the customary musical honours.
