There is sure to be a good attendance at the euchre party and dance in aid of the town queen, to he held in the Manaia Town Hall to-night. Good prizes will he given for the euchre, and a first-class supper and floor for the dance, so all roll up. There was a large gathering in the Hawera Hospital grounds yesterday aiternpon, when the boys of the Eltham Salvation Army Boys’ Home submitted a programme which was much enjoyed bv visitors and patients alike. A number of vocal and instrumental items were given which reflected credit on the hoys and their instructors alike, a sacred vocal duet by two of the smaller members of the party being particularly pleasing. The Prime Minister, replying to the invitation of the Egmont A. and P. Association to, officially onen the show next month, states“ Will you please, convey to the committee an expression of mv thanks for the invitation, and assure them of my appreciation of their courtesy in this respect. I am afraid I am unable to give any definite indication just at present as to whether I shall be able to visit Hawera on the occasion, but I shall be very glad to bear the matter in mind and communicate with you a little nearer he date of the fixture.” Barraclough’s Magic. A benefit concert in aid of funds to purchase a piano for the Old People’s Home is being organised, and arrangements have been made to hold the concert at the Opera House on Tuesday, October 21. The xiromoters state that an excellent programme is being arranged, details of which will be announced later.
The Women’s National Reserve will hold a general meeting to-night in the Mother’s Rest Room, at which all members are requested to be present, as important business will be discussed.
The attention of members of the Hawera Accountant Students’ Society and all business men is drawn To the advertisement in our columns announcing a public lecture by Mr John Houston, LL.B., on the subject of “Bills of Lading.” The importance of the topic warrants a full attendance of business men and students.
The proprietor of the Empress Pictures, Manaia, has installed a wnreless plant .at the Town Hall, and it is his intention to give wireless concerts in conjunction with the pictures, on certain nights, of which due notice will be given by advertisement. Mr. Horton has shown enterprise which no doubt will be fully appreciated by his patrons, to the majority of whom the wireless programme will probably be a novelty. Mr. Horton believes this to be the first attempt of the kind made by a picture showman in New Zealand.
At the confirmation service at St. Marv’s Church on Friday evening the number of candidates presented to the Bishop of Wellington (Dr. T. H. “nrott) was the largest in the history of the Church of England in the Hawera Parochial District (changed by last Synod to Hawera Parish'!. The church was full some time before ..the service began. In addition to. the local clergy, the Revs 11. W. Monaghan and C. F. Bush King, the vicars of Patea (Rev H. L. Goertz) and Manaia (Rev. A. C. Swainson) were present. The elmir was large,- and the singing of suitable hymns was entered into by all present with an appreciation of their meaning and of the solemn occasion. The churchwardens (Messrs Gilbert and Townsend) presented the candidates. The Bishop preached from the Psalm xxxvii. verse 3: “Trust in the Lord, and do good.” His Lo-rdshin defined trust, and showed how the Chvitsian could obtain a greater realisation of the Fatherhood of God. Dr. Sprott said that- there were three ways in which the Christian could gain that trust of which the Psalmist wrote—through reading, through prayer and communion, and through keeping His commandments. The Bishop concluded his inspiring address by asking the 'candidates to the text- and to read and read again’the Gospels.
