Ernest Cuthbert Barratt, a doctor \r +i? farm < ?' vner ’ of Palmerston Aorth, appeared in the Police Court today on charges of furnishing false income tax returns in 1920. An application by counsel for the suppression of the mcome tax figures was refused. Ihe evidence showed that defendant owned several farms and in addition he worked at his profession. In 1920 nicno 111 '!^ 2 - 3 he I funiished returns for £1609. £1 (4o and £2090 respectively, instead of £5350, £4747 and £4086 ft was stated that defendant gave the investigator every assistance. ' magistrate said he was satisfied the false returns were not made wilfully. No books had been kept. Defendant was convicted of negligence and was fined £IOO on each c.f the three charges.
