INTERRUPTED CAMPAIGN

Presumably as a result of publicity in the morning papers the President to-day deemed it advisable to issue an official denial of a rumour that the sudden recall from the Pacific Coast, where he has been campaigning on behalf of the President, of the Secretary of the Navy (Mr F. D. Wilbur) was the result of inopportune speeches made by Mr Wilbur on such topics as Japanese exclusion and the necessity for a strong American, navy for de-. fence in the Pacific. The President, declares that he has summoned Mr Wilbur to "return because he requires an. immediate. consultation- with him on domestic concerns of the„navy. The newspapers, however, think it strange that the President’s summons was so summary that the Secretary of the Navy abandoned his speech-mhk-mg tour and is now speeding back to Washington as fast as train and aeroplane can carry him. .He expects to arrive at the end of the week. ■
