HAWERA OPERATIC SOCIETY.

‘‘OUR MISS GIBBS.”

f( ;F he ea s. a . nt acquaintance with Our Miss Gibbs” is like a burst of sunshine after rain, for its funny situations and droll dialogue strike a refreshing note, being of the description that compels an audience to hold its sides. Further, it is many a day since a single comedy has. ..been crammed so generously . with lilting melodies. So welcome will be its revival in Hawera at the instance of the Hawera Operatic Society in a three-night season that commences at the Opera House on Wednesday, the 17th, the comedy being of modern type. Timothy Gibbs from Yorkshire and Hon. Hughie Pierrepoint, gentleman burglar, are creations that are classics of their kind,"~iriiTle no other musical comedy heroine has quite the appeal of Mary, a simple country girl deposited in the oasis of a London store. Her lover is Lord Eynsford, and the unsmooth path of true love leads to many strange places, including “Venice in London” at the’ British Empire Exhibition, where all sorts of fashionable and wonderful people gather. Timothy follows a more rocky path than the lovers, for he quite innocently makes an exchange of a bag containing dairy produce, etc., for one containing a burglar’s plunder outfit; so he finds himself saddled with all sorts of crimes. The settings of the play lend themselves to display both in costuming ballet effects and scenery. One special charming ballet which the producer, Mr T. E. Foster, lias created is “Mcon Fairies,” in which forty performers will take part. The solo dance in this will be performed by Miss G. Lay. Then especially delightful should be the dancing of the Irish colleens, puipls of Miss Moore. In such songs as “My Yorkshire Lass” Mr Fred Lowe, who plays the part of Lord Eynsford, should be heard to advantage. As Lady Elizabeth Thanet Mrs 11. L. McGregor should make a fine foil to Mary, and Mrs G. Tocker can be relied upon to give a finished performance in the role of Madame Jeanne, the Scotch-Frenc-h lady. In the choice of a producer the Society are most fortunate in being able to secure the services of Mr T. E. Foster, who was with the firm of J. C. Williamson Ltd. for a period of over 27 years. The box plan for the* season will open at Everybody’s Sweet Shop next Friday morning at 9 o’clock, when there is sure to be heavy booking.
