MANUTAHI.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

The hall was crowded last Friday night, the occasion being a dance- given by the gentlemen of the district. Great pains had been taken to make the affair a success, the . hall being tastefully decorated Avith long green and red streamers hung from the roof. Nikau palms and ferns adorned the Avails, and it all helped to make a charming picture with the pretty and graceful frocks of the ladies in the throng. Everything went merrily as the dancers tripped the ‘ ‘light fantastic toe” to the strains of the excellent music supplied by Renwick’s Orchestra. Visitors came from all parts and helped to make things go Avith vim. Supper Aras partaken of at 11.30 o’clock. Several extras were played by Miss D. Corn Avail. Messrs D. Scliwass and C S. Barclay acted as' M’s.C. The party broke up at 2 a.m., after a very enjoyable evening. The proceeds wilt go to swell the hall fund. Year after year these entertainments have been held for the benefit of the hall, yet the building seems practically the saiye today, although a great improvement has been made. Avith the lighting—one can distinguish BroAvn from Jones noAv-a-days. There are several matters that need immediate attention, especially the ladies’ dressing-room, the door for one thing apparently being kept locked on account of the ' dangerous broken step, and various other matters. A good chair for the chairman has been long Avanted here. The local school is closed for the spring vacation. ( Residents should beAvare that stoats are about, destroying eggs and gardens if they only get the chance. The beautiful spring floAA'ers are in evidence everyAvhere. After the usual sliiftipg of milkers in the district, matters on the farms have become normal again. Now' AA'e are into September, the grass seems very hare and scanty, owing no doubt to the cold winds AA'hich hloAv so frequently.
