COMMERCIAL UNION.
Mli MASSEY AMPLIFIES HIS REMARKS. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS . ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 1. Amplifying his - remarks in the House on the establishment of a commercial union between different parts of the; Empire in place of . the present independent operations, Mr. Massey said: “It may be looking a long way ahead, but I believe the time wiil come, as events are tending that way. My idea is that- it might be possible to come to some commercial arrangement between the different • countries of the Empire to put certain articles on the free list such as foodstuffs and some raw materials. We are much nearer that ideal than we have been in past years.” Whether the commercial union would be associated with the economic committee proposed at the. last Imperial Conference he coukl not say, as both suggestions required vei'y careful consideration. He confirmed Mr. Bruce’s statement last week that he had been advised that the British Government proposed to go ahead with the recommendationis of the Imperial Conference for setting up an Imperial; Economic Committee to provide for the effective organisation of primary produce for export and marketing in the United Kingdom. This committee has now been, agreed to by the various Dominion Governments.
