NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION

HEADQUARTERS IN WELLINGTON

(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTQn; Aug. 28. Considerable interest attached to the meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Boxing Association to-night in that this was the first meeting of the newly appointed council in Wellington. Dr. McEvedy was unanimously appointed chairman of the association. In acknowledging the honour, Dr. McEvedy referred briefly to the controversy which, had agitated boxing •circles for some time, and subsequent to the transfer of the controlling headquarters to Wellington he had expressed the opinion that the members who had been # asked to hold office for the first year would be found fully competent to handle the affairs of the association in the interests of sport generally and to the satisfaction of those connected with it. He concluded with a statement that the object of the governing body was not only to look after the interests of the affiliated •associations and competitors, but also to safeguard the interests of the public who supported boxing. The position of secretary was filled bv the appointment of Mr. G. P. Aldridge after Mr. W. G. Talbot had declined nomination. Mr. Aldridge resigned his position -as a member of the council, and it was unanimously decided to ask Mr. J. W. Heenan to fill the vacancy.

ELTHAM TOURNAMENT. At the Town Hall, Eltham, to -morrow evening the Eltham Boxing Association are staging one of the finest tournaments ever put on in Taranaki, having a s P eciali y selected team of -no 1 boxers for the occasion. ■*- ollowing are some of those participates 1) 1U the tournament: Jefferies (Wellington) is a very clever boy and a favourite with the Wellington public; lie always puts up a good fight and will be a good match for Hoskins Crowley is a genuine bantamweight with an exceptionally clever left hand. He met Hayward at the Wellington district championships at Hawera, and was considered unlucky to lose. Crowley has come on a good deal m training, and will give Hayward a good light. W. Pearce is‘a brother to the ex-clianipion Cliff Pearce. He has not been long in the game but ior speed and clean hitting ho is hard heat and will keep Mercer moving all the way. Lewis has only appeared once before the Wellington public. He 1 ought at the "Wellington Centre championships, where he created a favourable impression. He will prove a good match for ft. Cadman. Renner i,s another Mind” of the Wellington championships, but was unable to appear at Hawe in. He is hard and last, and will make Duggan go the whole of the journey. Brown is an in and out lighter, but, a real knock-out artist, and will prove a suitable match -for smaller. Plamos hails from Auckland. He met Mcßae in Wellington and put up a. creditable .showing. He is a big, husky fellow of 14 stone, and will he sure to keep Pepperell ou the move. This is a. line team of boxers, none being far short of championship class. Followers of the sport in Taranaki are being well catered for by the Eltlmm Association.
