POWER BOARDS.
RATING OF NON-CONSUMERS. AN IMPORTANT POINT. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 26. An important point concerning the position of boroughs with gas-works being affected by hydro-electric systems was raised by a deputation to thfe Minister for Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coates) to-day. It was asked that the Minister should repeal Section 4 of the ElectricPower Boartßs Amendment Act of last year authorising power boards to impose special rates varying from £1 to £3O on non-consumers of electricity. Mir O. N. C. Pragnell (Mayor of Masterton) said the question at issue affected gas-works undertakings in connection with municipalities. The power boards’ conference had not intended the provision to apply to boroughs with gas-works. The clause (was put forward to meet the case of tile Southland Board, which found that farmers in certain areas would not take the power. He contended that the principle was wrong when given a general application in the wav set out in the Act. The Minister said the Act was in operation over the whole Dominion, and they could not find a case where an injustice has been done. However, he would go into the question of boroughs reticulated with gas. The Act was undergoing the test of experience; if it proved to be wrong it would soon be altered.
