The application of Mr. W. ot!Callaghanot!Callaghan to erect a circular sign above the entrance to his garage was granted. A plan submitted by the Hawera Timber and Joinery Co., Ltd., of a proposed subdivision of land at the intersection of Camberwell Road and Glover Road was approved, and on the su Sg e stion of Cr. The application of Mr. Blair for permission to lay an extra- £in. waterpipe to the rooms above Messrs. Blair and Sellar’s shop -was granted. Tire Department of Health wrote suggesting that opportunity be given the borough inspector (Mr! L. Hunt) to study and sit for the Royal Sanitary Institute examination, and that as soon as that officer had obtained the certificate the present arrangement whereby an officer of the department carried out sanitary inspection work in Hawera in return for £4O per annum would terminate. Councillors agreed that there seemed to be some overlapping in the work of the two inspectors, and it would be agood move to arrange the work so that the house inspection was done by the one man. Worship said he understood that Mr. Hunt -was agreeable to take the course necessary. If he were successful his work could be rearranged so as to prevent overlapping. Such rearrangement would also effect a saving of £BO per year to the council. It was decided to thank the department for their letter and accept their recommendation. The borough inspector reported on an inspection of the Kapuni River above the intake, his report containing details of the finding of two dead beasts m the riverbed.. , ? r '. Brunette moved that the riverbed be inspected every month. The motion was seconded. Cr Reid considered that there should be an inspection each month during the months of September, October November and December, ahd thereafter quarterly. He moved an amendment m this direction, but it was not seconded.

The Borough Inspector’s monthly report was as follows : —House inspection had been carried out in Union Street and Camberwell Road. Owing to Show Week and wet weather. I have net inspected as many dwellings as usual. Necessary notices have been sent to owners with reference to repairs to dwellings, etc., the majority being in good repair. , During the month 20 building permits were issued, of a total value of £11,832. Nine persons were prosecuted under the by-laws, a fine being imposed in each case. Total fines £B. Four dogs were .registered
during the month; total fees, £2. Three fowlhouses were condemned, as I con|iered they were a menace to health. 1 am gradually pursuing a course by which i hope to have all foivlhouses complying with the by-laws. The sanitary inspector's report stated that during the month of July two plumbing and three drainage permits were issued. Five drains of a total length of 23(>it. were inspected and tested. Seventy-five premises were inspected, and any necessary v notices issued. The borough engineer reported upon various brands of bitumen. The librarian’s report stated that 24 members left diking the month \and 19 joined, leaving about 460 on the list. Sixty-live books were added to the shelves, including 30 to replace old dilapidated volumes. Mr Metcalf, schoolmaster of Fraser R-oad, would be pleased lo buy the II copies of “Merchant of Venice” for use in his school. They are. not needed in the library, as we already have two of Shakespeare’s com-plet-e works, and. those small books aro printed and arranged for school use. The borough ranger reported that on July 27 one horse was found straying m Dixon Avenue.. a herd of eight cows that were driven along Egmont Street and Camberwell Road twice a day for some time have been disposed of. There were two cows in the Turuturu. Reserve during the month, and there being no gate makes it very awkward to get stock out. Being a wire fence, a beast is liable to get in during the winter months. There is also a bunch of blackberry growing on the reserve. The reports were all adopted.
