GREATER HAWERA.
QUESTION AGAIN BEFORE BOROUGH COUNCIL. At last night’s meeting of the Haweivi. Borougn Council a letter was received from the Assistant Lnder-Sec-retary of the Department of ; Internal Allans, stating that he was in receipt ol a communication from Messrs o-pract and Matthews advising Mm that the Greater Hawera Committee or the Council had been going into the question of the merger of Noiantown, iuri Towii, Ramanui and Tawluti with the Borough of Hawera. As the Council were aware, the petition by the ratepayers concerned had already been presented in respect of the Nolantown area, but if it were desired that Turi Town, ltamanui and iawhiti be also included within the Borough, it would be necessary that a further petition be presented, signed by i . I^P t i le , ss tliail one-fourth of - the qualified electors resident within these areas, or, in the alternative, the Council could petition under section rr i the Municipal Corporations'Act. It, however, the Council proceeded unciei the latter it would be necessary for a commission to be set p to consider the matter of the petitioii before tlie alteration could be made.
The Mayor moved that the Council ■ write, thanking the Department for the letter, and advising .’hem that the Council had no intention at present of moving under section 133.--I lie motion was seconded. His Worship explained that there was a committee appointed at the meeting before last to meet the County Council, but he had been away and so the committee had not yet approached the County Council. €r. Reid considered it was premature to move the motion indicated by the Mayor, especially when the committee had not dealt with the matter. -
lhe Mayor pointed, out that it wasnot the present intention of the Council to move unde, r Section 133, although, of course, there was no telling what might happen in tli© futi\-e. Cr. Reid said that from the tone of a committee meeting he had understood that the Council were going to act under the clause in question. , Cr. Morrissey said h e did not think that the resolution would affect the position. Unless the ratepayers were agreeable a move to bring them in would, uot be made by tile local body. The resolution was then put and carried.
