“RINGING IN.”

A QUEENSLAND CASE. HORSE-OWNER FINED £2O. BRISBANE, July 27. Backed from a long price down to even money a mare won a race at Innisfail on November 17. and it was found afterwards that she was “rung in.” This ringing in resulted in John Denny, alias Alick John Denny, appearing in the Police Court at .Brisbane to-day. He was charged that by falsely pretending to the secretary of the Johnstone River Turf Club that the bay mare nominated in the Fifth Division Handicap on November 17 was a bay mare registered as Bayardere, he obtained from the secretary of the dob £9 10s with intent to defraud. Sub-Inspector Head stated that the detectives found that the horse raced by Denny was identical with a mare called Barellis, purchased by the accused from the Brisbane trainer, William Booth. It was also learned that she had raced at other meetings in North Queensland under the name of Northern Queen. Denny had disposed of the mare, thinking that she could not be traced, but she was later found in Cloncurry. Accused pleaded guilty, and asked to he dealt with summarily. “I didn’t think it was a Police Court matter,” lie said, “but one for the club to deal with. In pleading guiltv. I will be disqualified for life, and this will be a serious matter for me, as I have two other horses, and will have to sell them.” Denny was fined £2O, and ordered to make restitution of the amount of the prize money, in default three months’ imprisonment. An application for time to pay was refused.
