MATERNITY HOMES.
N ICO A RELY EX PENDI TUR E. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.; WELLINGTON, Aug. 7. Rleas for more liberal financial support for the Health Department and the expenditure of money in providing maternity homes were made in the House this afternoon by Mr. V. H. Potter (Roskill). He declared that the department was asked to do its work on niggardly expenditure, and it should he more liberally supported. He then proceeded to discuss the position of maternity homes in the Dominion, contending that small homes not properly equipped should be closed up The report regarding the recent incidents at the Kelvin maternity home (Auckland) showed the British Medical Association to be a. close corporation, which would have to be dealt with. He adversely criticised the report, dclaring it was designed to cover up the omissions of members of the British Medical Assocation, and did not express a. single word of regret at the deplorable happenings in that home. He thought that instead of money being spent on museums, etc., it should be expended on building and equipping maternity homes.
