Tins is the first triangular match by the Miniature Rifle Clubs in Taranaki, and it was a pronounced success Tlie arrangements for the compiling of sco:es and for adjudication on targets wore in the hands of an umpires’ committee of three, one selected from each team, and this was found to he a much more expeditious and fair manner to deal with the targets than any pit?\ious arrangement. The umpires' committee consisted of TVver (Hawera) Ross (Waverley), and Hotter (Manaia).’ Li ei ything was run strictly to timetable, and much credit is ‘due to E. Thurston as range officer and F. Rae as mounds officer for their good work in this connection. "
-Alter the mat eh the visitors were entertained at simper by the Hawera Club at Glasson’s tea-rooms. i'Vyer (president of the Hawera Club) briefly welcomed the visitors, and Messrs Catanach (Waverlev) and J. S. McKay (Manaia.), as presidents of their respective cljjbs, suitably replied During the evening the Hawera president, in a neat speech, took the opportunity of making a. presentation to\ Mr. H. Collier, as a mark of appreciation and esteem of the members of the club and in recognition of his work as president for the past two years. Mr. Collier, in thanking the members for their handsome present, announced his surprise at the presentation, and stated that the gift would always be among the most cherished of his possessions. Mr. Collier then proceeded to advocate the formation of a Taranaki Miniature Rifle Association, and stated that it was primarily for that reason the triangular match had been arranged, fie stressed the importance of each club working bard to increase its membership, and thought that a parent body with representatives from each affiliated club could do much to further the .-.port in the district He compared the mi nature cluhs with the football clubs, and pointed out that, but for a eontioiling parent bodv, the great All. Black team would lie an impossibil.t\, whilst, the sport itself would quickly become parochial and finally die out. Ho urged the three clubs present to seriously consider the forma_ tioii of such an association, and alluded to the Necv Zealand Association which it was proposed, to form at the next annual miniature rifle meeting in Christchurch.
Mr. Catanach,. president of the H averley Club, stated that he could not commit his club to anything offhand, and said the club ‘ had been affiliated with the Wanganui Association, hut for various reasons had dropped out. He promised to go thoroughly into the matter with his committee and would advise the result later.
Mr. J. S : . McKay, president of the Manaia Club, endorsed Mr. Collier’s remarks, and said that such an association wa s a, necessity, and the Manaia Club could be depended on to do everything possible to further the scheme/ Ml ft- Kryer also spoke on behalf of the Hawera. Club, supporting the proposal, and said he was pleased that Manaia was also in N the running, whilst he felt sure Waverley would soon give the proposition every assistance. Cheers were given by the respective clubs, and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought a "most successfiil gathering to a close.
