It is reported that there is a shortage cf coke supplies in Wanganui at the present time. The attention of the members of the xiaueia Miniature Rifle Club is drawn to the fixtures with the Waverley and Manaia Clubs at Hawera on Wednesday, 23rd mst. The matter of inducing either the Railway Department or some bacon firm to instal a set of scales at AVaitotara on which to weigh pigs was laisod at the- "VY aitotara Farmers’ union meeting on Saturday night. It was ie.solved to enlist the assistance cf the provincial executive in this connection. A Sydney message reports the death of Mr Thomas Craig Gillies, civil engineer, son of the late Mr Justice Gillies of Auckland. As the dates for the presentation of the opera “Our Miss Gibbs” draw nearer the members of the Hawera Operatic Society are showing the keenest interest in their work, and the practices are being fully attended. The scenery and costumes have now come to hand, and it is expected that the performances will come up to the anticipations of the iiromotevs. The solos mid choruses of the opera are very popular in New Zealand. “Our Miss Gibbs” is one of the most tuneful of the light operas, and its reproduction in Hawera should be heartily welcomed by the public. i ”lb e "Wanganui Chronicle reports that during tho week-end two motor accidents occurred—one at Gonville, and the oilier at YYostmere—and, in each case, the occupants had narrow escapes from injury, «<ncl unenviable experiences. The vicinity or Cutfield’s corner, about a mile on the Wanganui side of Westmere, was the scene of a minor motor sir.asn at about 12.30 o’clock .yesterday afternoon. The particulars to hand are meagre, but it is understood that a shooting party including Messrs E. I*. Pridham and Arthur Coe, were p.-oceding to Kai Iwi, in a taxi, -.viien the vehicle capsized. ILcre were five passengers in the car at the time, and apparently they and the driver were thrown clear of the fated pair. The driver was the most .seriously injui-cc* of the parw, and was conveyed to iiis home in Wanganui, but the extent of his injuries is not known. The other members of the party sustained contusions and are suffering from shock, while Mr Pridham injured a shoulder, which necessitated medical attention. The ear was fairly extensively damaged, and the hood was bent into an unrecognisable shape. An accident occurred at Gonville at about 2 o’clock on Sunday morning. It appears that a man named .Jackson was conveying a youth to the hospital, in a six-sea ter car, when, owing to some misunderstanding, lie collided with a Ford car, containing a loothail party, including j.loyd and Ronald Stewart, Alex Take.i-angi and MacFarlane. The hospital patient escaped .without injury, but the driven*. Jackson, sustained a broken left arm. His injuries were attended to subsequently, and he is progressing satisfactorily. The members of. the football party escaped without injury, with the exception of Mr Alex Takaraugi, who was dazed through his head coming in contact with the hood of the car. The Ford was little damaged.
