COLD WEATHER.
SNOWFALL IN CHRISTCHURCH. ' CHRISTCHURCH, July 21. After a night- of heavy rain and -s eet, snow fell steadily in Christchurch this morning and work had to be stopped on the Lyttelton wharves. A glimpse of Mt. Egmont early this afternoon showed that the snow was well down over the.forest belt, and the wind, which, during the morning, had changed to the east,-had a “bite” in it indicating that snow had fallen not tar from Hawera; the thermometer was tour degrees lower at 1 p. m . than it was at 7 a.m. At- lunch time to-day there was a tall of snow lasting about half an hour at Eltham, but it melted almost as quickly as it fell. VERY COLD NIGHT. The Government Meteorologist telegraphed tc>-day that indications are for southerly winds, strong to gale at times. Weather probably cold and changeable, with scattered showers. Ihe night will probably lie very cold Barometer rising. Seas lieavv.' Tides good.
