OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT. ANNETTE KELLERMAN IN “VENUS OF THE SOUTH SEAS.” Golden beaches, thick bush and flowering trees are the backgrounds necessary for a thrilling story of the pearl fishers in the South Sea Islands—and plenty of sun. That is why the Nelson district of New Zealand was chosen as tli e most suitable background for “Venus of the South Seas,” a story that abounds in the stirring, desperate adventures of pearl smugglers, their marvellous skill in the sea, and their cunning hiding ydaces in the bush. Against the vivid background of action. and colour is woven a fascinating romance, which tells of a solitary white girl on an island of natives, famed for her beauty and skill in diving and swimming. And the man comes on the scene when his luxurious, pleasure yacht is becalmed. How they' met, and just what happened is told in a series of absorbing incidents in “Venus of the South Seas,” a master picture which no New Zealander can afford to miss. The supports are said to be excellent and include a Mermaid comedy “Exit Caesar,” the latest Patlie Gazette. The Hawera season of two nights opens this evening.
