In addressing the meeting at the nonchwicn of the formal business Air hitzGerald thanked the members for the lnyitation to lie present, and stated that it was only by such meetings as this that he had an opportunity of meeting breeders and clearing un any misunderstandings that may arie*. At the annual meeting of the association the chairman had said that the only road to success was co-aperation, which had been highly successful in Denmark, and the future success of the pig industry in New Zealand lay in eloser l elation ship between the breeders and the association, and the branch could materially assist in bringing this about, lhe general meeting had also made the, suggestion that the British Association should send to New Zealand gratis a number of really good pigs, and this suggestion would probably be given effect to when the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Great Britain has been overcome. Dealing with the matter of inspection, the speaker stated ™ at a meeting of members held in IJJO the question of the;appointment of. an inspector who would insnect all applications for registration before they were admitted to the Herd Book was discussed. Air Gorringe had been appointed to the position, but the result had been farcical, as it was impossible tor one man to inspect all the nigs offered registration from all vavts of -New Zealand. Mr Fitz Gerald pointed out that inspections were , not necessa£y.\ as if breeders cared to breed rubbish it would be to their own detriment and not that of the association. It it was thought necessary the branch could ask that a breeder’s pigs be inspected before registration, and a qualihed judge would be sent by the association to carry out the work. The speaker then dealt with the proposed +L U e r> o * * n t^ie section for the Royal Show, and said that the association was not satisfied with the ages specified in /the schedule, and were taking up the matter with the committee of the Royal Society At the condusion of his address a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Air Fitz Gerald for coming to Hawera and for the information he had given to members. Mr F. Cornwall urged all breeders who do not possess a complete set,of the Association Herd Books to apply to the secretary for them, as the early able eS W ° U d soon * ,)ecome very valu- . A vote of thanks to the chair brought a successful meeting to a close. ' - the cl ? se of the general meeting the committee of the branch .met and adopted the rules governing the operations °f the branch and several other details of local interest.
