HIGHLAND PIPE BAND. ANNUAL MEETING AND SMOKECONCERT. The annual general meeting of the Eltham Pipe Band was held on Thursday, Mr A. A. Stewart (president) presiding over a good attendance. In moving the adoption of the annual repoifc, the president commented on the comparatively s/nall amount of funds in hand, and he strongly )•_commended that every endeavour be made by the band to increase the amount. In his opinion the balance shouLd not be allowed to fall below £SO. Mr AY. J. Tristram, in formally seconding the motion, agreed that the financial aspect was not as good as it might be-, but probably at tne end of the coming year the position would be improved. Air J. L. Campbell, speaking to the motion, referred tc the difficulties encountered during tne year. They had lost several good members of the hand, and although the numerical strength was now good, it was often difficult to get the members together. The decrease in irevenue was largely due to fewer engagements during the year. Ini former years, when only a. nominal change‘was made, engagements were plentiful, but now, when a fair charge was requested by the band for their services, fewer engagements were forthcoming. He thought that good progress could be made if all ivho were interested in the welfare of the band would encourage the playing members by putting in an appearance at the practices occasionally; The report and balance-sheet were then adopted.
The following officers were duly elected: President, Mr W. J. Tristram; vice-presidents, Messrs A. A. Stewart, H. D. Forsyth, E. Crabtree, AY. G. Simpson, and P. T. Aitken; patrons, Mr 0. J. Hawken, M.P., and Mr I. J. Rridger; secretary and treasurer, Mr Q. AY. Carncross; auditor, Mr H. Northover; drum-major, Mr J. L. Campbell; pipe-maior, Mr J. F. Crawford; pipe-sergeant, Mr C. Morrison; pipe-corporal, Air C. Carncross; drumsergeant, Air C: AVliiting; drum-cor-poral, Air R. Styles. In. proposing Mr C. AY. Carncross as secretary* and treasurer, Air Stewart spoke very highly of the splendid work done on behalf of the band by Air Carncross during tlie years he had filled the office, and especially during the past year, when the duties had been particularly arduous. Mr Tristram endorsed these remarks, and Mr Carncross was elected by acclamation. It was unanimously agreed that the secretary receive an honorarium of £lO 10s. Messrs J. L. Campbell, C. AY. Carncross, J. F. Crawford and the president (Mr Tristram) were elected a management committee to deal with urgent- matters. Alessrs J. L. Weir, A. 0. Casey, H. G. McDonald and Hie members of the executive of the Hawera Scottish Society were elected honorary members of the band, and Air Bruce Hanson was elected as a playing member. Air Tristram stated that the rules allowed for the election of life members as a recognition of .any signal service performed for the band. Over two years ago Air D. Clement had organised *a queen carnival, and through his efforts a considerable sum of money had been received by the band. He had great pleasure in moving that Air Clement he elected a life member. The motion was carried unanimously. Mr Stewart said that as a last duty in his year of office he had a most pleasing act to perform'. Drum-major J. L. Campbell had done exceptionally good work »<-r the band, and the members, recognising his great services on their behalf, wished to present him with a handsomely-mounted Highlander’s dirk, which had been subscribed for by the playing and honorary mem-bers.—Drum-Aiajor Campbell suitably acknowledged the gift. Air Tristram moved a vote of thanks to the chairman - and retiring president (Air A. A. Stewart), which was carried bv acclamation. —Argus.
