AUCKLAND CASES. SUBSTANTIAL FINES. (by telegraph —press association.) AUCKLAND, July 2. A trio of “hob bettors” came before Air W. R. AlcKean, S.AI., at the Police Court to-day, charged with publishing double charts. * I rederiek .James Archer, a single man, pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective Cummings said Archer had been laying small doubles at £2 to Is in a billiard room. He had been twice fined £5 for failing to attend drill. On the present charge he was fined £ls (costs 7s). A week was allowed in which to pay. Alatthew Scott also pleaded guilty. Detective Cummings said Scott had only been laying small doubles at £2 to Is. He was a married man, and had previously been convicted. The accused: “It is the first time I have ever laid them. 1 thought I might make a little pocket money. 1 do not get a very big wage.” A fine of £lO (costs 7s) was inflicted, a week being allowed in which to pay. A man who had just turned twentyone years of age was next- charged. Air Singer stated that the accused had only laid small doubles at £2 to Is among his friends. The chief detective said the accused was a- clerk, and .when the offence was committed he had not turned twenty-one. He. had never been convicted before. A fine of £7 and costs, to be paid within a. week, was imposed, the magistrate ordering +hat accused’s name should not be published.
