EVEREST EXPEDITION
CLIMBER WITHIN 600 FEET OF TOP BY CABLE—PEESB ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT DELHI, June 27. The last despatch from Colonel Norton, leader of the Everest expedition, states that two desperate endeavours were made to reach the summit, during which a world altitude record was made, culminating in a tragedy. The first attempt was made by Norton and Somerville from the camp at 23,000 feet. This party, without oxygen, reached within 600 feet of the summit. Somerville almost collapsed, and Norton was able to go only a few feet further. When they returned to the camp they found that Mallory and Irvine were determined to make an attempt with oxygen. They were last seen going strong 600 feet' below the summit. —Sydney Sun Cable.
