The Church and the Liquor Traffic.

(By Telegraph.)

(Per Press Association.)

Auckland, This day

At a meeting of the local Church of England clergy held yesterday it was agreed to call upon Government to enforce the Licensing Act in its entirety. As a means to this end it was decided to ask the Government to amend the Licensing Act so as to include the clause from the English Act making it illegal for persons to be found on licensed premises during prohibited hours unless lodgers or travellers. A committee, consisting of Archdeacon Dudley, Revs McMurray, Gillam, and Beatty, was appointed to act in furtherance of the object. The meeting also expressed gratification that already the licensed victuallers had taken definite action in the direction of securing amongst themselves the stricter observance of Sunday closing.
