THE FEDERAL MOVEMENT.

N.S.W. CREATING OBSTACLES

{Per Press Association- —< noht.)

Sydney, This day

The Legislative Assembly struck a blow at federation last night by passing the second reading of the federal Enabling Amendment Bill by a majority of 46 to 27The Bill provides for 100,000, instead of 50,000, votes in the affirmative to be necessary before the new Constitution can be accepted. The Premier opposed the increased number, but accepted a compromise of 80,000. Even this number will make federation difficult of attainment. The Bill, which was prompted byprivate members, is regarded by the supporters of federation as a distinct breach of faith with the other colonies.
